Not every album is fantastic, but it wasn't like that in high school either.God will make a wayworship song with lyrics by don moen by. Rediscovering things you heard a decade ago is just as awesome as hearing things new. A buddy of mine and I started tracking (in a spreadsheet) all the albums we listen to every week and discussing, which provides a lot of motivation to keep listening.
So at the beginning of 2021 I decided to put a lot more effort into listening to music again. I remember listening to loads of albums in high school, everything completely fresh, and missing that energy. Since graduating I kinda felt that music lost it's spark (covid did not help), which was definitely depressing. I recently turned 24 and found myself in the exact same situation! I got super into rock and metal music in my early teenage years but had very little time to listen to anything in college. Still an enjoyable lot of songs, just not meeting the band's true potential. While there are many good riffs, I'm not hearing/seeing the "theater of mind" that Bruce discusses in his memoir. Songs like "Brighter than a Thousand Suns" and "When the Wild Wind Blows" tell a musical story, even in sections without lyrics, but other than "Empire of the Clouds", the recent two albums feel like a hodgepodge of riffs and messy improv solos. But BoS and Senjutsu lack the atmosphere and much of the songwriting sounds much more patchwork. The second half of the Final Frontier is a masterclass in lyrics, atmosphere, and adventure that felt the climax of 15+ years of honing their skills at writing epics. While I enjoyed the recent two albums, it feels like they're phoning it in while in the studio. Book of Souls and Senjutsu sound hollow to the point it heavily detracted from the albums. BNW through Final Frontier sound great (maybe not stellar, but still very enjoyable).
Kevin Shirley isn't the problem causing recent production issues. If Bruce sung on Virtual XI and the production were as good as BNW, it would be a reunion classic.ĭespite what this subreddit says, Wildest Dreams is a kickass opener and gets my amped every time. Just about the only one with any bite to it. The middle groove in 7 absolutely slaps though. Alexander is still a good song, though the lyrics read like a textbook and are awful because of it. The pacing and the vibe don't work in the context of everything else, and I think the album is better if you just stop listening after the superb Deja Vu. It feels like an awkward novelty.Īlexander the Great does not fit on Somewhere In Time. The chorus to Invaders ruins the entire song. It feels subpar despite having loads of energy and near-perfect production. Killers is an enjoyable listen but all the songs blend into each other.
